Fast facts: Learn more about Dolphins RB Jaylen Wright, their fourth-round pick

0

MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins traded into the fourth round of the NFL draft on Saturday to select Tennessee running back Jaylen Wright.

It was Dolphins’ first selection of the day and a bit of a surprise. Miami entered Saturday, which features Rounds 4-7, the conclusion of the three-day draft, with a fifth-round selection, two sixth-round selections and a seventh-round selection.

Jaylen Wright

Pos./round: RB/Round 4

School: Tennessee

Year: Junior

Ht.: 5-11 Wt.: 210

Hometown: Durham, N.C.

Comment: Predictably, Wright is about speed and big plays. He ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine and he averaged 7.4 yards per carry (1,013 yards rushing on 137 carries). …

Wright figures to be part of the running back rotation alongside Pro Bowler Raheem Mostert, young speedster De’Von Achane, veteran Jeff Wilson Jr., and young, physical runner Chris Brooks. …

He seems like a good fit for the Dolphins offense and their outside-zone running scheme considering he favors outside runs so his speed, his best asset, gets put to use. …

Wright had a gain of 10 or more yards on 25.4% of his carries. …

He was No. 3 in college football in yards after contact. …

Wright had 22 receptions for 141 yards last season. …

He’s hit a top speed of 23.7 mph on the field. …

It’s interesting the Dolphins selected a running back as opposed to another receiver or a tight end, and it might be a reflection of the health concerns for the running back unit as a whole. …

The Dolphins traded into the fourth round to select Wright, giving Philadelphia a 2025 third-round pick, which seems like a bit much to give up for a player that doesn’t fill a need.

This file will be updated with the rest of Miami’s Day 3 draft selections.
