My curtain hack will make your windows look bigger and let in more light – don’t mount them the way most people do
A HOMEOWNER with a luxurious sense of style has revealed how a budget-friendly curtain hack enhanced the rooms in their house.
They said simply hanging curtains in a specific way can make a home look more spacious and bright.

They said it’s important to have a plan before transforming any room to make the most of the space.
Decorative curtains topped their list of features to have as they suggested installing a double curtain rod with sheers and outer curtains.
“Now, here is a curtain hack – you don’t have to mount the curtains on the exact shape of your window,” they said.
“Most people do, and if you do, you lose a bit of window to the curtains, and you can never get light through that space.
“If you mount them a bit outside your window, then you can make it look bigger, and you can get more light into the room when the curtains are open.
“You can even put curtains across the whole length of a wall.”
Hundreds of people upvoted the post and commented that cheaply bought large pieces of artwork can also enhance empty spaces.
“Alternatively, if you don’t want to shell out for a double curtain rod but still want to be able to work the sheers and curtains separately, you can hang the sheers on a bungee cord and stretch it along the rod,” one person said.
Another commenter recommended visiting thrift stores to find furnishings for a bargain.
“The curtain placement thing is important!” they wrote.
“Anchor your rods like half a foot (15cm) at least from the edge of the window.
“Regarding thrift stores: if you live in a city, check thrift stores in different neighborhoods.
“Even chain thrift stores tend to carry what was donated to that specific store, or things the management thinks will sell best in that neighborhood.
Budget interior design tips
Interior designer Judy Hoang shared her furniture tips with The U.S. Sun.
- Thrift furniture and paint it to match your decor.
- Test if an item is fit for its purpose before thrifting.
- Shop at Target or HomeGoods for rugs, lamps, desks, and pillows.
- Invest in classic timeless pieces.
- Set up smart home lighting to save money.
“I know two stores that are best for finding furniture and home goods, and a different one miles away that’s best for clothes.
“Things don’t have to match. They don’t have to be the exact same color.
“If you get things that don’t match but are in the same color family and/or style, they’ll ‘go together’ fine.”
The hack comes after interior designer Kristen McGowan told The U.S. Sun that metal grommets along the top of curtains look cheap.
“The best-looking curtains are often custom, pleated, do not have grommets, and can be hung with curtain rings,” she said.
“You can create that same luxurious look on a budget just by choosing affordable curtains without grommets.
“You can then install them high and wide above your window frame to make your space look larger, hang them using coordinating curtain rings, and absolutely make sure to steam them for a crisp and elevated look.”
