Over 200 protesters detained at four US Universities over Gaza war
US police forces detained over 200 individuals in raids on gatherings of pro-Palestinian students at four universities across the country.
These individuals were arrested at Washington University in St. Louis, Arizona State University, Indiana University Bloomington, and Northeastern University.
The New York Times reported that university authorities across the US are trying to prevent protests and growing demonstrations against the Gaza war in these locations.
On the 18th of April, Columbia University requested the New York City Police Department to evacuate pro-Palestinian students who had set up tents on its premises.
Since then, police forces have detained over 700 protesters at universities across the country, with many of them being released in several cases.
Washington University in St. Louis announced the closure of its campus on Saturday evening, reporting over 80 arrests on its premises.
Among the detainees, Jill Stein, the Green Party nominee for the 2024 US presidential election, and two members of her election campaign stand out.
These elections are scheduled to be held on November 15th of this year.
Massachusetts state police raided a pro-Palestinian rally at Northeastern University in Boston, arresting 102 individuals.
It is unclear how many detainees were students, but officials at Northeastern University stated that individuals who presented their student IDs were released.
According to the New York Times, police used zip ties to arrest protesters and dismantled some of the tents set up by pro-Palestinian supporters on university premises.
Renata Neyul, a spokesperson for Northeastern University, stated that “professional organizers” had infiltrated this gathering.
She added that protesters crossed a red line by chanting anti-Semitic slogans such as “kill the Jews.”
Protesters denied both of Neyul’s claims, accusing university officials of ignoring their demands.
