SAN RAFAEL
Appeal denied for
transit hub shooter
An appeals court has declined to grant a lower sentence for a man convicted for a 2012 shooting at the San Rafael Transit Center.
LaDrakeous Sonny Dean was sentenced to 47 years to life in prison in 2014 after a jury convicted him of attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm. The unarmed victim was shot twice. The prosecution alleged that Dean planned the attack.
Dean got the prison term reduced to 34 years under new sentencing laws, but a judge refused to dismiss a 20-year firearms enhancement. Dean filed an appeal with the 1st District Court of Appeal in San Francisco. In a decision released Tuesday, a unanimous three-judge panel rejected the appeal.
Dean, 35, is incarcerated at High Desert State Prison in Lassen County.
