Punchestown Festival betting preview – Day four picks and advice

Day four, arguably the most popular day of the Punchestown Festival sees the reigning Champion Hurdler, State Man looking to win back to back Punchestown Boodles Champion Hurdles, and at odds of 1/3 he will likely have no problems in doing so.

After the shock of Galopin Des Champs getting turned over in the Punchestown Gold, will the same faith in the Champion Hurdle?

Let’s hope not.

I have three today that I think will be battling out in the finish today. All come here on an upward curve and on top of their game.

Punchestown 4:15 – 2m4½f Listed EMS Copiers Novice Handicap Chase

Seventeen runners will line up for the 2m4½f Listed  EMS Copiers Novice Handicap Chase, and a case can be made for all.

Harry Derham will look to go one better here with Sir Psycho after Brentford Hope was unfortunate to run into the very well-handicapped Daddy Long Legs on day one.

But he along with the rest of the field will do well to contain PERCEVAL LEGALLIOS, who looks to be well ahead of a mark of 137.

After his chase debut win at Galway, it’s fair to say that he was looked after in his two proceeding runs.

He arrived at the Dublin Racing Festival on 135, when coming to the last upside Heart Wood everyone was thinking ‘how far is he going to win by’. But just like that, he fell at the last leaving the race to Heart Wood.

To my surprise, he has only been put up 2lb for that, and if he can get a clear round here today, it is hard to see him not cashing in on what looks like a generous mark.

Top weight Mister Policeman comes in here with a chance after the step up in trip has brought some needed improvement, but he will find it have to conceded 12lb to Perceval Legallios.

Punchestown 4:50 – 2m4½f Grade 2 Hanlon Concrete Irish EBF Glencarraig Lady Francis Flood Mares Chase

This looks to be a weak renewal of the Grade 2 mares chance, and to me, it looks like a two horse race between Allegoire De Vassy and Brides Hill.

But, this looks an ideal opportunity for BRIDES HILL to claim her first graded success of her career.

She comes in here a fresh horse on the back of her dominant display in a Listed chase at Huntingdon where she look a horse about to hit the peak of her powers.

Both met in January of 2023 where Allegoire De Vassy was a 17 length winner, but she is not one to trust these days. She isn’t the most resolute of mares and I will be taking her on with Brides Hill.

Brides Hill smacks of a horse who we have yet to see the best of, and she can take the step up in grade in her stride here and go onto bigger and better things.

Punchestown 5:25 – Event Power Champion Hunters’ Chase

This could shape up to be one of the races at the Punchestown Festival. Some old favourites like former two-time Cheltenham Festival winner Samcro, and Hunters Chase legend Billaway line up for one more shot at glory on the big stage.

But even at their best, they will find it hard to stop the progressive ITS ON THE LINE.

After his near miss in the Hunters Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, Its On The Line went on to right the wrongs when winning with authority in the Aintree Hunters Chase over the Grand National Fences.

The galloping nature that the track at Punchestown processes is sure to play to his strengths here. He tends to race lazy, but crack amateur Derek O’Connor looks to have mastered how to ride Its On The Line.

Even given that this is a Hunters Chase with a lot of depth to it, it will be a shock if Derrick O’Conner can not get Its On The Line over the line

Boss Robin is a steep upward curve and could be one to play each way.
