Tottenham receive blow to Champions League qualification hopes thanks to Dortmund 

After Borussia Dortmund’s win over Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal, it has now been confirmed that an extra Champions League spot will go to the Bundesliga rather than the Premier League.

With the Champions League format set to change next season, an extra spot will be handed to the two countries with the highest UEFA coefficient ranking based on the results in the three European competitions this season.

Ahead of this week’s result, it was clear that one of the two extra spots would go to Italy but there was still some hope that the Premier League could get the other spot if results in all three competitions went favourably.

Spurs need top four for Champions League

However, following Bayern Munich’s 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in the first leg of the semifinal on Tuesday followed by Dortmund’s win over PSG the next day, the Premier League can no longer overtake the Bundesliga in terms of coefficient points.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Germany will be handed an additional Champions League spot for next season, with England only getting the usual four.

This means that Tottenham would have to pip Aston Villa to fourth place to get back into Europe’s premier club competition next season.

I am coming around to the idea that it would be far from a disaster for Spurs to spend a season in the Europa League. Not only would we have a better chance of going all the way and winning the competition but we could also rotate the squad in the group stages, which is a luxury we would not have in the Champions League.
