Portland State campus closed again as police prepare to clear the library
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The Portland State University campus is closed again Thursday, officials announced as police are preparing to move into the library.
The pro-Palistinian rally turned violent late Wednesday night as many people dressed in all black were seen smashing windows of businesses and campus buildings.
KOIN 6 crews at the scene saw several physical and verbal fights in the crowd.
There are rumors on social media suggesting protesters may take over more campus buildings today.
A KOIN 6 News crew on campus early Thursday morning witnessed barricades being built outside the Branford Price Millar Library, where occupiers have been holed up since Monday night.
"From what I've heard I'm not going to class tomorrow, [Thursday]" one student said. "I've read and seen too many things on social media for me to feel comfortable, that something bigger is going to happen…so there's nothing, I'm not coming here tomorrow. I don't feel safe."
Meanwhile, the library remains occupied and vandalized for a third day, drawing criticism from other students for depriving others, especially disabled and low-income students, of essential educational resources.
Police began surrounding the library early Thursday morning, putting up tape and warning the occupiers that arrests will occur.
