Opinion: Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea
Tottenham Hotspur fell to yet another defeat at Stamford Bridge this evening as Chelsea ran away comfortable 2-0 winners, succumbing Spurs to a third defeat on the bounce.
Let’s take a look at the five things we learned:
Midfield Shambles
It’s obvious why Tottenham will prioritise a move for a new midfielder as soon as the summer transfer window opens. For weeks now, Ange Postecoglou has been forced to make double, even triple substitutions to complete change the midfield three in order to spark Spurs into life. Hopefully, this is just a case of Ange needing another transfer window to make some midfield signings that better suit his style of play, but it’s a worrying trend at the end of this season for Tottenham.
Romero for the Golden Boot
Cristian Romero is already the top-scoring defender in the Premier League this year with five goals, but if he works on the timing of his headers he could grab a lot more next season. The Argentine scored once against Arsenal but missed a couple of real sitters along the way too. Add another one to the pile from this evening as Romero powered a header just wide of the post when he had the full goal to aim at. Thinking back, the World Cup winner has actually missed a whole chunk of them this year. If he can improve that side of his game, Spurs could have a great aerial asset there.
Stand Up Sonny
You expect the best from Sonny on a normal night, but even more so when he’s up against a 20-year-old making just his second Premier League start in Alfie Gilchrist. Son should have picked up the ball and run at the youngster over and over again. He should have terrorised the kid to the point of nightmares. Instead, he barely touched the ball in the first 45 and then drifted in and out of the game in the second. Spurs really need more from their captain in these kinds of games when the team needs to be dragged by the scruff of its neck.
Angry Ange
Those watching the liver coverage of the game would have seen how angry Ange Postecoglou got on the touchline in the first half. The likes of Pape Matar Sarr, Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero all got an earful about passing the ball backwards too much. You can see why he’s so frustrated too, when you compare how Tottenham are playing now to the kind of fast and progressive football they were playing in the first third of the season.
He’s One of Our Own
A silver lining amidst another awful defeat – Mikey Moore made his first appearance on the bench this evening at just 16 years of age. That comes as a reward for some great work in training over the past month. A huge congratulations to Mikey and his family. He’s one of our own!
