UNICEF announces 240 flood victims in Afghanistan
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Afghanistan has announced that 240 people, including 51 children, have lost their lives due to the flooding in the country.
This organization warned of an increase in the number of victims of this event by publishing a report on Sunday, May 12.
According to UNICEF, approximately three thousand houses in Balkh province and at least three hundred houses in Takhar and Badakhshan provinces have been destroyed.
UNICEF emphasized that it has provided 450 family kits, 500 hygiene kits, 476 blankets for adults and infants, and one hundred clothing kits to the flood-affected people.
Tajudeen Oyewale, UNICEF’s representative in Afghanistan, expressed sympathy with the families affected by the floods in the country, stating, “UNICEF and our partners are on the ground and making every effort to provide rapid assistance to affected families and communities.”
According to UNICEF’s report, Afghanistan is among the 10 most climate-vulnerable countries and suffers significant loss of life and damage to infrastructure due to extreme weather changes, especially droughts, floods, and storms.
UNICEF has announced the dispatch of a mobile health team supported by this agency to the flood-affected areas.
Previously, the World Organization for Child Protection in Afghanistan had stated in a report that over 600,000 people have been affected by recent floods in Balkh, with 310,000 of them being children.
This comes as the recent floods have resulted in significant loss of life and considerable financial damage in some provinces of the country, especially Balkh, Takhar, Badakhshan, and Ghor.
