Agent says new Tottenham star ‘would not be out of place at Man City’
Micky van de Ven has been getting a lot of praise in the Dutch media, with some even suggesting that he could think about swapping Tottenham Hotspur for a bigger club in the near future.
Van de Ven has had an extremely impressive first season in the Premier League since his move from Wolfsburg last summer. with the Dutchman already being recognised by many as one of the best central defenders in the division.
Despite being just 22 years of age, he has a very calm head on his shoulders and complements Cristian Romero very well with his composure and raw recovery pace.
The Netherlands international has been voted the Player of the Season by Spurs fans, which is no mean feat when one considers the world-class talent he is playing alongside at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs will want to keep Van de Ven for as long as possible
Former Netherlands coach Frank de Boer admitted that he is mightily impressed with what he has seen from the centre-back since his move to London.
When asked about Van de Ven, he told Viaplay (relayed by FC Update): “Fantastic, he has done an incredible job. Played for the Dutch national team, and became player of the year. The fact that you can play so many games at this level in your first season says something about him I think.”
De Boer revealed that the Spurs man was on his radar when he was managing the Orange three years ago.
He continued: “We knew he was a great talent. He has speed and that’s so important. In addition, he has good technique, that combination makes him a very good defender.”
When asked if Ronald Koeman should include Van de Ven in his squad for the European Championship, he said: “I think so. He has a weapon: speed. If we want to play with the Dutch team with space at the back… Normally he plays centrally, today [against City], he plays left back. That is also an added bonus. He can really play Dutch football. A very modern central defender.”
Meanwhile, Dutch agent Simon Cziommer, who is also an analyst for Viaplay, suggested that it might not be too long before Europe’s elite clubs look to poach Van de Ven from Spurs.
He is quoted as saying about the defender: “I think if he continues like this, he would not be out of place at City. Guardiola plays with seven, eight men in front of the ball, leaving you with one/two defenders at the back. Then you need speed and duelling power. And Van de Ven has that.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There is no doubt that Van de Ven’s ceiling is extremely high and should he stay injury-free, he looks destined to develop into one of the best centre-backs in world football. I not only see him making the Netherlands squad but I think he has a chance of starting for the Orange at the Euros alongside Virgil van Dijk.
