Northeast Kansas bar seized for failure to pay $81,000 in taxes
JUNCTION CITY (KSNT) - The Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) says it seized a northeast Kansas bar this week as it owed thousands in delinquent taxes to the state.
Aubrey Challquist, a KDOR spokeswoman, told 27 News in a press release that KDOR agents and Geary County Sheriff's Office deputies executed 11 tax warrants against Coyote Saloon Inc., located at 130 W. Seventh Street in Junction City, at 10:30 a.m. on May 13. Assets were seized and the saloon, referred to locally as Coyote's or Coyote's Saloon, was sealed shut for failure to pay corporate, liquor drink, sales and withholding tax amounting to a little more than $81,000.
- Sales tax - $3,516.61
- Corporate tax - $54,770.07
- Withholding tax - $1,117.66
- Liquor drink tax - $21,912.31
The KDOR seized assets including all known bank accounts, on-site cash, business inventory along with personal property belonging to the owner. A notice was also posted on the business to inform the public of the seizure.
Challquist says all of the seized assets will be sold through a public auction with the proceeds going towards paying off the delinquent taxes owed by Coyote Saloon Inc. Customers, employees or others who had items at the business are encouraged to reach out to the KDOR by calling 785-296-3289.
"KDOR’s policy and practice is to work with taxpayers in delinquent status to voluntarily enter into repayment agreements. It is only after these efforts and multiple failed collection attempts that the Department is forced to execute a tax warrant, utilizing such actions as bank levies, till taps, and ultimately asset seizure to ensure compliance with the law."
