COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Columbus Humane seized 39 dogs and 40 leopard geckos after serving search warrants at multiple places in Franklin County.

On Wednesday, Columbus Humane agents executed multiple search warrants in the north, south, central and east regions of the county and seized the animals in partnership with the Columbus Division of Police, Franklin County Sheriff's Office, and Reynoldsburg Police Department. The agencies said four suspects are facing felony and misdemeanor charges for dogfighting offenses and prohibitions concerning companion animals.

The dogs taken into custody had wounds that suggested they had been used in organized dogfighting, according to Columbus Humane. They were also found to have a variety of untreated medical conditions ranging in severity. Over 100 pieces of dogfighting paraphernalia were also seized.

The leopard geckos were found with signs of severe neglect and other untreated medical conditions. Of the 40 leopard geckos seized, 16 were dead.

Columbus Humane is still in the early stages of this case. In the release, the nonprofit said it is focused on providing medical treatment and care to the animals before addressing whether they would be available for adoption.

A probable cause hearing for the four suspects is set for May 22.

In April, a Sunbury man received 30 misdemeanor charges after 40 dogs were seized from his home.
