The Geordie Shore star took to Instagram to share that in March 2023 he developed a white head at the back of his scalp after getting a haircut.

Although he originally thought it was nothing to worry about, the condition on his scalp quickly worsened.

“I never never talked about this before or even shared anything to do with it on social media,” he penned alongside a carousel of snaps of his scalp.

The father of one said that the problem quickly began to spread which urged him to go to the doctors to get it checked.

“It was something called Folliculitis decalvans and [I] had to go on steroids and all [sorts] to stop it spreading,” he said.

“Then it gets worse again the whole back of my head had gone bald like literally whole back of my head had fell out.

“I literally hardly left the house and didn’t no what to do!!!”

Fortunately for Gaz, his scalp eventually healed but he went on to explain that he was left with scarring and some bald patches.

“I started looking up a few things about it and the patches and if there was anything I could do,” he shared.

“I’ve heard a little bit about SMP but never thought it would be some thing to help me .. it stands for SMP scalp micro pigmentation.”

The reality star then started to look into his health condition and came across a scalp specialist called Lynden and his business Inked Scalps.

“After seeing his work etc I was up for going to see him… after one session which hardly hurts almost feels like a light tattoo you could already see the scarring disappearing,” he wrote.

“I had 2 more sessions and honestly I am so f—ing happy I hated the scars and patching and now… it’s like it never happened!”

He finished the post by explaining that he just wanted to spread awareness of SMP, adding that it “can be used for all sorts alopecia, male and female pattern baldness, receding hair lines, thinning & all types of densification.”

Fans immediately rushed to the comments to share their support towards the star, with one writing: “Very brave of you to share your story Gaz.”

A second added: “Oh Gary, that must’ve been devastating for you! My matter how it happened, that would rock anyone’s confidence. I’m so glad you have bounced back.”

A third commented: “Love that you share your story for other people who’s suffering, thank you.”

A fourth said: “That’s an amazing outcome and story on such a vulnerable condition.”

Geordie Shore

Gaz was part of the original Geordie Shore line-up back in 2011 when the show first burst onto our screens.

He then quit in 2017, but starred in two series of spin-off show Geordie OGs.

He quit for the second time in 2020 and married then-girlfriend Emma McVey in 2021.

However, Gaz stunned his followers late last year when he announced that the marriage was over.

Moving on

Last month we revealed that he has moved on with England’s top woman golfer Charley Hull.

They were spotted recently at Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club in Alnwick, Northumberland.

A source said: “Gaz has made no secret of his love of golf and seems to have found his perfect match in Charley.

“She is at the top of her game and Gaz is enjoying getting on the course with her to pick up new skills.”

What is Folliculitis decalvans?

Folliculitis decalvans is a rare long-term condition of the scalp causing inflammation and hair loss.

According to the NHS, it is usually not serious but can often cause pain, inflammation and itchiness.

The main symptoms of the condition include:

  • Small pimple-like pustules which form at the base of your hair strands
  • Redness and inflammation around the pustules
  • Red, painful bumps on the scalp (even if no pustules are visible)
  • Dome-shaped yellow crusts or scabs on your scalp
  • Pain, itchiness and your scalp may hurt when you move your hair
  • A burning sensation on the scalp.

Mild folliculitis tends to go away without any medical treatment.

However, If self-care treatments don’t work, your doctor may give you medications or recommend other treatments.
