My Grammar School careers teacher told me I had to sign on for 9 years and apply to be an Officer cadet if I wanted to join the army, it's all I ever wanted to do but at 18 I didn't want to commit to 9 years. Obviously it was a lie and I could have signed on for an initial 3 years then longer if I was enjoying it.
