Lawmaker: constitutional amendments must be done "the right way"

0

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — This week on Empire State Weekly, the Equal Rights Amendment was removed from the November 2024 ballot. An upstate New York Assemblywoman filed a lawsuit over the amendment.

Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes a Republican representing District 133 explained her reason for filing the lawsuit. Democrat lawmakers had not secured an opinion from the state's Attorney General on the amendment before bringing it to a vote.

"What the Democrats did in order to try and amend the Constitution in the fashion they did it they actually violated the current provisions of the Constitution and I just think it's wrong," said Byrnes.

Also this week, Timothy Hogues, the Commissioner for the Department of Civil Service, explained the steps the state took to make hiring easier for state jobs. He explained that state agencies faced shortages following the Coronavirus pandemic. The state waved the Civil Service exam for some state jobs, to help fill the gaps.
