Jennifer Lawrence Jabs at Mike Pence at the GLAAD Awards
Jennifer Lawrence received pushback from many on the right after joking about former Vice President Mike Pence receiving conversion therapy at the 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.
“I love the gay community. In fact, I was in love with a homosexual. I tried to convert him for years, but now I know that conversion therapy doesn’t work,” the star of the Hunger Games movies said. “Did you hear me, Mike Pence? I said conversion therapy isn’t real. Even though I know you think it worked on you.” (READ MORE from Elyse Apel: It’s Not Just Nickelodeon: Quiet on Set Exposes Hollywood’s Darkest Side)
Lawrence continued: “He’s in New York tonight. He’s receiving a Kid’s Choice Award for weirdest d***.”
Elites Gather at the GLAAD Awards
GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, labels itself as “the world’s largest Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization” and uses its annual award show to recognize LGBTQ music, films, and TV shows.
GLAAD annually distributes awards to “LGBTQ Allies,” this year honoring the gay romance film Red, White & Royal Blue as the “Queer Fan Favorite.” Orville Peck, a country singer who only performs masked, received the Vito Russo Award for “elevating LGBTQ visibility in country music.”
The event drew many A-list movie stars, organizations, and musicians, and even politicians didn’t fail to turn up. Rep. Justin Jones, a Democrat who was temporarily expelled from the Tennessee state House last year for disruptive protesting, spoke at the ceremony.
“We will never be silenced. If they turn off our microphone, we’ll bring a megaphone. If they try [to] ban Pride and drag, we’ll show [up] even bigger and stronger,” Jones said. “Show up in rural communities and let them know that we are a force to be reckoned with because we represent a new South and a new nation.”
Conservative Pushback
While many on the left applauded Lawrence’s comments, calling them “brutally hilarious” or a “fantastic joke,” others found her not just distasteful but ridiculous.
The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh called out the irony of the actress’ comments. “I can’t think of one individual who is an easier target than Mike Pence,” Walsh said. “Although it is interesting that, once again, we have someone on the left insulting someone on the right by claiming that person is gay.”
Others were quick to join the criticism.
“GLAAD has repeatedly insisted over the years that it is not okay to make jokes in which the punchline is someone being gay,” said Brad Polumbo, co-founder of BASEDPolitics, on X. “But because they’re targeting Republicans and Mike Pence… that’s fine. Can you smell the hypocrisy yet?”
