Canning Town fire: Huge blaze erupts at tower block with black smoke visible for miles as 70 firefighters tackle inferno
A HUGE fire has erupted at a tower block in east London with thick black smoke spewing out for miles around.
The Canning Town inferno on a construction site is being tackled by 70 firefighters this morning with one person being rescued using a 13.5m ladder.
Video posted to social media showed thick black smoke billowing from a tower block.
The buildings are a construction site, with two cranes on the block and the lot protected by fences.
Footage taken by a witness riding the cable car showed the black smoke rising above the buildings and travelling north.
London Fire Brigade said in a statement they had 10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters responding.
They said: “Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters are responding to a fire near Silvertown Way in Canning Town.
“The fire is located in a construction site.
“One of the Brigade’s 64m ladder deployed to the scene as part of our response, and one person was rescued by firefighters using 13.5 metre ladder.
“The fire has been producing significant amounts of smoke. People in the area are advised to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area where possible.
“The Brigade has received over 25 calls reporting the fire, with the first call taken at 0823.
“Firefighters from Plaistow, Poplar, East Ham and surrounding fire stations are attending the scene. The cause of the fire is not yet known.”
“The cause of the fire is under investigation.
“Please avoid the area as we respond. More information to follow.”
The Met said it was not aware of any injuries.
