AN ICONIC hatchback that was discontinued in the UK five years ago is set to be re-released as an EV.
The new ultra-cheap motor is expected to hit showrooms in 2026.
The Renault Twingo left the UK market back in 2019 amid flagging sales, but is now confirmed for a stunning comeback.
The model, which gets its name by blending the words “twist”, “swing” and “tango”, had been on sale since 1993.
Its successor will be developed in partnership with an unnamed Chinese engineering firm, according to AutoExpress.
However, the company emphasised that the entire process will be led by Ampere, its sibling brand dedicated to EV manufacturing.
CEO Luca De Meo has dubbed the electric Twingo the “silver bullet for sustainable mobility”.
It is expected to be the latest entry into the market for super-cheap, small electric cars.
In recent years, carmakers have been locked in a race to the bottom to create sub-£20,000 EVs to capitalise on demand for budget motors amid the net zero transition.
And the new Twingo is set to be no different, with prices starting under £17,000.
Renault is claiming that it will also be one of the most efficient models available at 6.2 miles per kWh.
Plus the brand says it will produce 75% less carbon emissions over its life than the average European combustion car last year.
Mr De Meo added that designers had taken inspiration from kei cars, a form of small vehicle popular in Japan.
He said: ” I like very much the idea of translating into European language the concept of kei cars in Japan.
“So I think that there is some intelligence in that kind of concept, because it’s not only a product issue.
“It is a product-plus-regulation [issue] to enable efficient and low-impact human mobility.”
It comes after a hot hatch dubbed the “cloak of invisibility” by Jeremy Clarkson was revealed to be available for under £12,000.
