ChatGPT is down for thousands of users

ChatGPT is down for users across the UK and US, with the AI chatbot’s owner OpenAI working on a fix.

The issues started around 8am UK time, with thousands of reports on Down Detector by 10am.

OpenAI quickly noted the issue on its service status site, and said it was investigating the issue. By 8.30am it said it had identified the issue, but is still working to correct it.

Some users are being presented with the usual text box to ask questions but missing additional content on screen. While able to type questions, they cannot be submitted.

Others are seeing a bad gateway error message.

Launched in November 2022, ChatGPT has more than 100 million weekly users, according to its parent company.

The issue follows a Microsoft outage last week which also affected the chatbot.

Many users took to X, formerly Twitter, to share the issues they were seeing.

Writer and editor Tokyo Todd said: ‘ChatGPT is down. What if it never comes back and we have to use our own brains to write stuff again?’

Investigative journalist Jake Adelstein wrote: ‘I’m asking ChatGPT why it’s not working but I’m not getting an answer!

‘I might have to ask a human being.’

Digital marketer Egline Samoei added: ‘ChatGPT is down. A short moment to go back to using our brains and typing from scratch. Thank you, Gemini for saving the moment.’
