A Connecticut convicted felon was sentenced to eight years in prison for illegally possessing a loaded firearm that he brought and discharged at a party in Meriden in 2021, officials said.

Brandon Ramos, 25, of Meriden, was sentenced on May 31 by Judge Peter L. Brown to 10 years in prison, suspended after eight, followed by five years of probation for criminal possession of a firearm, according to New Haven Judicial District State’s Attorney John P. Doyle, Jr.

On Aug. 23, 2021, Ramos reportedly brought a loaded firearm to a party in Meriden and discharged the gun several times, court records show. He had previously been convicted of a crime that prohibited him from possessing a firearm, according to court records.

Prior to sentencing, Ramos waived his right to a jury trial and asked Brown to determine whether he was guilty or not guilty, the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice said in a statement.

“In announcing the sentence, the court stated that there was good cause to extend the period of probation to five years, the maximum period authorized by law,” according to the DCJ. “The court also indicated that two of the eight years of incarceration are mandatory, pursuant to statute.”

Doyle extended his gratitude to the Meriden Police Department for their assistance in the investigation.
