Rahul Dravid confirms that the T20 World Cup will be his final assignment as the head coach of the Indian team

The legendary batsman who took the position back in 2021 has decided to step down from his position after the T20 World Cup.

New York: Rahul Dravid has confirmed that he will not reapply for the position of the head coach of the Indian cricket team after the T20 World Cup concludes. Dravid whose contract runs out at the end of the month, took the role back in 2021 and his time as the coach has kind of been a mixed bag. Under his guidance, the Indian cricket team has played quite well but have failed to win any major silverware. He guided the team to the finals of both the World Test championship and the World Cup last year but ended up falling short on the final hurdle in both the tournaments.

“It is going to be the last one that I am in charge of” the 51-year-old told the reporters before India’s opening match against Ireland on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, the kind of schedules and where I find myself at this stage in my life, I don’t think I’ll be able to reapply.

“I love doing the job. I’ve really enjoyed coaching India and I think it’s truly a special job to do.”

This year’s T20 World Cup is Dravid’s final chance to win a major piece of silverware with the Indian cricket team and finally end the team’s international trophy drought which has been going on for almost 11 years with the last international trophy that India won being the ICC Champions trophy 2013.

“I enjoyed working with this team and it’s a great bunch of boys to work with” Dravid said.

India will face Pakistan on June 9 and the hosts USA three days later before concluding their group fixtures against Canada on June 15.

The BCCI is yet to decide Dravid’s replacement. There are rumors that Gautam Gambhir will be the next head coach, but nothing is confirmed yet.
