Micah Richards says he had been holding back his controversial Spurs opinion
Micah Richards has said that Tottenham are now a better side after selling Harry Kane, insisting that the league table is proof that the North London club were correct to sell the England captain.
With Kane having just a year left on his deal last summer, Spurs made the decision to sell their record goalscorer to Bayern Munich.
Unsurprisingly, the 30-year-old has been utterly dominant since his move to the Allianz Arena, finishing the season with 44 goals and 12 assists, and winning the European Golden Boot.
Not a lot of pundits gave Spurs a chance of finishing in the top six this season after Kane’s departure, with the likes of Paul Merson suggesting that the Lilywhites would even struggle to finish in the top half of the table without their talisman goalscorer (Sky Sports).
However, Spurs did not have an issue finding the back of the net in the 2023-24 season, with many of their attacking players stepping up and making up for Kane’s loss.
Were Tottenham right to sell Harry Kane?
Given that Tottenham have accumulated more points and finished three places higher this season, Richards believes that the decision to sell the centre-forward was the right one.
The former Man City man said on Rest is Football podcast: “Are they better or worse with Harry Kane? Well, basically, they got more points this year, didn’t they? They got a higher finish this year. So, I’m going to have to say, selling Harry Kane was the right thing to do.”
When Gary Lineker directly asked him “Are Spurs better without Harry Kane?”, Richards replied: “They’ve got more points and they finished higher, so you have to say yes.”
When Alan Shearer asked Richards what stopped him from making this admission months ago, the pundit responded: “I just wanted it to be concrete. I wanted the season to be done.”

I think one can certainly argue that Tottenham’s overall squad is now better than it was last season. However, it is always difficult to know with hypotheticals like this as Spurs could have finished in the top four had Kane led the line for Postecoglou’s side.
