OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - The world's first shopping cart was introduced in Oklahoma City on June 4, 1937.
According to the Oklahoma Historical Society, Sylvan Goldman created the first shopping cart based on a wooden folding chair design.
Goldman later manufactured the carts at a business he established called the Folding Carrier Company.
Despite their popularity today, Goldman's carts were not an instant success. Now, shopping carts are essential and used on a regular basis.
Sylvan died at his Oklahoma City home on November 26, 1984, one week after his wife passed away.
