Hairdressers issue warning against ‘hair dusting trend’ for spilt ends saying they’d ‘never let clients try it at home’
PEOPLE are being warned to steer clear of a new hair trend sweeping social media which claims to help split ends.
Hair dusting, which has garnered a whopping 24 million views online, is the latest in a long line of hair care trends going viral on TikTok.
The current craze claims to cut dead ends in sections using hairdressing scissors, but without losing any of the length – so it’s little wonder it’s garnered such attention online.
But all is not as it seems…
While the promise of healthier and shinier hair may be all to tempting, several top hairdressers have warned that it could result in total disaster and even end up with you losing “chunks” of your hair.
In one video shared online, London-based stylist, Your Best Hair, said: “Hair dusting is a hair-cutting technique that involves removing the smallest possible amount of hair to eliminate split ends without cutting the length of your hair.”
Elsewhere, The Hideaway, which is a salon based in Dubai, posted a video showing shiny hair after hair dusting, claiming the treatment “prevents future split ends”, Femail reports.
In the clip, the salon addresses its social media users and asks: “Have you tried hair dusting before?
“We remove the split ends and keep the length of your hair long and healthy…Get Rid of Your Split Ends without sacrificing a single inch.”
Meanwhile, another social media user named Monique M Rapier praised the hair dusting trend in part for helping with her impressive hair transformation.
There’s a danger of too much hair being taken off, and leaving the hair looking thin

“Once a week (max twice), set a timer for 10 minutes and trim any split ends you can find. Trim right above where the hair strand split,” she said.
“You do not need to cut any higher and you do not need to chop all your hair off at once.”
She went on to say that it’s simply a case of finding the damaged pieces of hair and trimming where the split starts, but warned not to trim all of the split ends at once.
“Do this for 10 minutes once a week,” she advised.
But despite being inundated with praise online, top hairdressers across the country have expressed concern over the hair trend.
“Please do not try this at home – it could end badly at the slip of the scissor and result in a chunk being taken out,” celeb hairstylist and founder of MAYFIVE Hair Katie Allan told Femail.
“The point of hair dusting is to keep the hair healthy and remove damaged hair that is beyond the point of repair.”
Siobhan Jones, who is the creative director at Blush & Blow London, also urged people not to jump on board the trend and warned there’s a “danger of too much hair being taken off, and leaving the hair looking thin.”
Instead, she recommended leaving it to the experts.
The 4 stages of the hair growth cycle
Hair experts at Philip Kingsley shared the four stages of the hair growtn cycle are: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen and Exogen
Anagen Phase: Also known as the ‘Growth Phase’ or ‘Active Phase’, is when the cells in the root of your hair are most rapidly dividing so more new hair is formed.
During the Anagen Phase, hair grows around half an inch a month [about six inches a year], and faster in the summer than in winter.
This phase of the hair growth cycle lasts an average of three to five years.
Catagen Phase: Following the Anagen Phase, your hair cycle enters a short transitional phase known as the Catagen Phase, which signals the end of active hair growth and cuts individual hairs off from the blood supply and from the cells that produce new hair.
Approximately three percent of all hairs are in this stage at any time and it lasts for around 10 days.
Telogen Phase: The third stage of your natural hair growth cycle is the Telogen Phase, a resting period when strands remain in their follicles but are not actively growing.
An estimate of 10-15 percent of your hairs are in the Telogen Phase at any given moment.
The Telogen Phase lasts around three months or 100 days.
Exogen Phase: The final stage of the Hair Growth Cycle, when individual hair strands are released from their follicles and fall out.
Now the whole process begins again.
