Explosion in Balochistan coal mine kills 11 miners

Officials in Pakistan’s Balochistan province have reported the death of 11 miners following an explosion in the Sanjdi coal mine in the province.

On Tuesday, June 4, the Express Tribune quoted Shahid Rind, a spokesperson for the Balochistan government, stating that the explosion occurred approximately 40 kilometres from Quetta.

Reports indicate that the explosion was caused by gas accumulation, resulting in extensive damage.

The Balochistan government spokesperson emphasized that “this is a devastating loss. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. The entire community is in mourning over this tragic incident.”

Previously, similar incidents in Pakistan’s mines have resulted in the deaths or injuries of dozens of miners.

Additionally, there has been a significant increase in militant attacks, further exacerbating the insecurity in Pakistan. These attacks have targeted various parts of the country, leading to numerous casualties and a heightened sense of fear among the populace.

In response to the growing insecurity, Pakistani authorities have intensified the forced deportation of Afghan refugees. Many refugees have reported being detained and forcibly sent back to Afghanistan, despite the ongoing conflict and instability there.

The situation has been further complicated by the government’s struggle to maintain control and ensure safety, as militant groups continue to exploit the country’s vulnerabilities, contributing to a worsening security landscape.
