Man fatally shot at Oakland homeless camp

OAKLAND — A man was fatally shot Tuesday morning at a West Oakland homeless encampment, authorities said.

Police were trying to confirm the man’s identity.  He is believed to have been in his 50s.

The shooting happened about 5 a.m. Tuesday at the camp in the 2300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

The man was found wounded on the street. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Police have not said if the man lived at the camp or was visiting someone there.

A motive for the shooting is under investigation.  No arrests have been made.

The camp has been the scene of other killings and violence over the years.  The most recent homicide there was on Christmas Day 2022 when a man was  fatally shot.

The Tuesday morning killing is the 36th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year.  Last year at this time police had investigated 45 homicides in the city.
