AN interior designer has shared 10 common design mistakes that make your home look cheap.
Vivien Albrecht revealed the type of cabinet that makes your home look dated and the kind of artwork you should veer away from.

80s Cabinets
Vivien revealed that 80s style cabinets make your house look cheap and dated.
She added that they look underwhelming and very ugly.
If you are unable to replace the cabinets, Vivien suggested giving them a lick of paint to liven them up.

“Some of you might really disagree with this but to me, any item with cursive writing on it, doesn’t belong in a well-decorated home”, she said.
Vivien said that the “worst offenders” include signs that say “live, laugh love” or “home sweet home”.
She said that if you remove these items, your house will instantly look better.

Vivien said that harsh lighting really cheapens the look of the home, and only belongs in the garage.
She said the the main reason this type of lighting looks bad, is because it’s unflattering, and reminds people of places like GP waiting rooms.
“If you have this kind of lighting, get rid of it”, she said.
Builder Grade Lights
Having builder-grade lights in your home makes it look like you can’t be bothered Vivien said.
She said that spending time looking for more interesting light fixtures will make your home look far more expensive.

Vivien advised against buying mass-produced copies of famous artworks, such as Mona Lisa.
“This looks cheesy and makes it look like it’s the only piece of artwork you know”, she said.
2024’s Top Trending Colours for Interior Design
Homebase has revealed the official trending colours for this year.
To predict the top shades of 2024, sales data at Homebase analysed 5 colours that have surged in popularity with customers.
Copper, pink and black are predicted to be the hottest colours on Brit’s walls this year, while bathrooms are seeing a surprising rise in terracotta colour schemes.
The top five trending colours for 2024 are:
- Copper (+57%)
- Pink (+38%)
- Black (+34%)
- Green (+29%)
- Orange (+27%)
Copper has replaced rose gold, whilst blush is the new magnolia, and Brits are also going bold by slapping black paint all over their walls.
Green is always popular colour, but the shade ‘Fresh Herb’ – a versatile, pale grey-toned green – is hitting hundreds of customers baskets.
Meanwhile, terracotta is taking over with ‘Frosted Papaya’, a peachy orange shade dominating bathrooms.
She said that it is better to find more unique pieces from lesser known artists.

Vivien said that thin curtain panels cheapen the look of your home.
“All you need to do is get an extra panel on each side of your curtains and sew them together”, she said.

Despite seeing the allure of using contact paper on countertops, Vivien said it will look very bad if it starts to peel or bubble.
“I would rather look at a dated surface”, she said.

Vivien said that mismatched plates, cutlery and mugs is “not a good look”.
“Do yourself a favour, and spend £20 in Ikea on a matching set”, she said.

The interior designer said that flat pillows make it look like you live in a hostel or cheap hotel.
“Buy yourself a new pillow, it will make your bedroom look so much better”, she said.
Clutter
Vivien said that if you are keeping “dusty knick knacks” your home will look cheap.
“If it doesn’t serve a purpose anymore, it’s got to go.
