Jon Hamm Recalls His ‘Dumbest’ Sex Scene
Mad Men star Jon Hamm discussed the “dumbest” sex scene he’s ever shot for film or TV in an interview with Kristen Wiig for Variety’s Actors on Actors series. Coincidentally, Wiig was Hamm’s co-star for the scene in question, the opening moments of 2011’s Bridesmaids.
In Paul Feig’s iconic comedy, Hamm appears in an uncredited cameo as a caddish bro who has a multiple-night stand with Wiig’s character. The opening montage finds them amorously engaging in comically acrobatic fashion, a scene which both recalled was a blast to shoot for them—if not the rest of the crew. As Wiig noted, the raunchy gag was saved for “the last day of shooting.”
Hamm recalled arriving to set unfamiliar with the cast and immediately put on the spot, as he was famous for playing Don Draper at the time.
“Everybody knew each other, and I didn’t know anybody except for Paul and you,” Hamm explained, adding that the crew was ready to go home after filming for several months. “All of that stuff in the bed at the beginning of the movie? Everybody just wanted to leave. And we were goofing around."
Wiig protested, telling Hamm the crew was excited to have a bonafide star in their presence. But he asserted, “I definitely felt the last-day energy.”
However, he ultimately enjoyed shooting the scene because it gave him a chance to act out with Wiig. “We could not keep it together remotely,” he said. “It was the dumbest.”
“It was so fun because it was so loose,” Wiig added. “‘What if we do this? What if we try this?’”
Hamm also recalled, “Paul Feig yelling sex instructions. ‘Put her leg over your shoulder!’ We’re in naked bodysuits. Dumb and fun.”
Despite the less-than-comfortable experience filming his short appearance in the film, Hamm said he’s honored to be a part of a movie with so much cultural staying power. “You and [co-writer and star] Annie [Mumolo] made one of the best comedies of all time,” Hamm told Wiig.
“And you made it great,” she fired back at him.
Bridesmaids is streaming on Amazon Prime Video and most other rental platforms. You can watch Wiig and Hamm's full Actors on Actors talk below.
