Man, 4 dogs survive 100-yard plummet down steep ravine in Baker County
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man and three dogs were rescued Monday morning after crashing into a steep ravine that was miles away from his family’s campsite in Baker County.
After driving over an embankment, Brandon Garrett never showed up to camp on Sunday. His family didn’t realize anything was wrong until one of his four dogs traveled the rest of the way alone.
Garrett had been driving north on U.S. Forest Service Road 29 when he plummeted from the embankment and crashed far below. Authorities later discovered he had crawled nearly 100 yards from his car before sleeping there overnight.
On Monday, deputies received a call from Garrett’s family who had found his car the next morning but were unable to reach it due to the terrain.
When officials arrived, they found the car in the ravine where Garrett could be heard yelling for help with his three remaining dogs – all alive. A group had to use chainsaws to clear a path for a search and rescue team to reach him.
When the team finally reached Garrett, they loaded him into a rescue basket connected to a highline rope system that pulled him across the ravine. He was taken to a hospital by helicopter, though further details of any injuries have not been released.
