Emmys update: ‘Hacks’ surges after strong season finale
Months before the highly anticipated third season of “Hacks” premiered, Gold Derby’s thousands of 2024 Emmy predictors collectively agreed that it poses the biggest threat to defending Best Comedy Series champion “The Bear.” As the Max series’ latest batch of episodes dropped throughout May, its standing in the main race steadily improved, with its well-received finale triggering noticeable boosts in multiple categories.
Over the past week, the share of top Best Comedy Series votes held by “The Bear” decreased by 1.2%, while that of “Hacks” grew by the same amount. Although the two programs remain separated by nearly 80 percentage points, it speaks volumes that “Hacks” is at least 1.5 points ahead of every other contender.
After simultaneously running second in their respective races for several weeks, lead and supporting “Hacks” actresses Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are now closer than ever to toppling frontrunners Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) and Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”). Einbinder, who is a predicted winner among our editors and Top 24 Users, experienced a post-finale top vote share increase of 3.3%, while Top 24 frontrunner Smart got a 1.2% bump.
The rise of “Hacks” is also reflected in the guest acting categories, where the show picked up five bids in its second year. Its third season female guests are faring especially well, as most clearly evidenced by previous nominee Kaitlin Olson being ranked second by our experts and editors and third overall. Potential third-timer Jane Adams rose above her previous 100/1 odds this week, as did new cast addition Helen Hunt.
Others who recently climbed out of the 100/1 odds hole are guest actresses Bebe Neuwirth (“Frasier”), Dale Dickey (“Fallout”), and Jane Krakowski (“Elsbeth”) and TV movie star Jessica Lange (“The Great Lillian Hall”). Lange’s film, which premiered on HBO last Friday right before the current Emmys eligibility window closed, presently ranks seventh on our Best TV Movie list.
Also worth paying attention to is the continual ascension of “Baby Reindeer,” which moved from third to second place in the Best Limited Series race last Thursday. Our editors, Top 24 Users, and All-Star 24 Users all expect it to take the gold, while the last group also predict a victory for supporting cast member Jessica Gunning.
Limited series frontrunner “Fargo” now holds a 47.5% top vote share compared to “Baby Reindeer’s” 32.0%. Since only about seven more percentage points divide drama leaders “The Crown” and “Shōgun,” major shifts appear imminent in both races. The same can’t currently be said for the comedy one, but there’s still plenty of time for “Hacks” to keep gaining ground.
