What investigation of dead fetuses says about abortion | READER COMMENTARY
How interesting it was to see the contradictory language in The Baltimore Sun article, “2 stillborn fetuses found Saturday on MTA bus in Baltimore” (June 3). This article inadvertently highlights the ongoing struggle of this country to come to grips with abortion.
This heartbreaking mystery leaves many questions to be answered. The contradiction? The article refers to “two stillborn fetuses.” Yet it notes that homicide detectives have assumed control of the investigation and that the case is listed as a “questionable death.” How could this be since, under Maryland law, any woman would be allowed to abort these unborn babies referred to as fetuses? The Sun’s competitor’s coverage even included language on Maryland’s safe haven law preventing civil or criminal liability to prevent infant abandonment. Why?
We know in our hearts that there is something terribly wrong with abortion because it destroys human life. Some of us who look at science and think rationally would conclude that it is right to be concerned about a questionable death in this case. Others, in the name of women’s rights, would say leave this case alone and dump the remains in the biological waste can.
Just another case that should make us think about this issue and question whether we are being the society we want to be. We must think deeply about the question of when life begins as we prepare for the referendum vote on Maryland’s proposed constitutional right to abortion in November.
