New York National Guard releases 2023 annual report
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEXSTAR) — The New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs (DMNA) manages New York Military Forces—our Army National Guard and Air National Guard, plus the New York Naval Militia and New York Guard. On Tuesday, June 4, the agency dropped its annual report for 2023.
The report details recruitment, support programs, training activities, weapons, equipment, overseas deployments, civil support missions, and economic impact. It says that the four branches included in the DMNA number 20,415 troops, divided like so:
- Army National Guard: 11,140
- Air National Guard: 5,809
- New York Naval Militia: 3,157
- New York Guard: 309
While Gov. Kathy Hochul is the New York Military Forces commander-in-chief, Major General Raymond Shields, Jr. is the adjutant general in command. By law, Shields must turn over this 84-page report to Hochul each year, accounting for New York's military operations during 2023. It concludes with several pages of information about the economic impact of New York's military based on salaries and tuition, construction expenses, and local contrasts. All of these represent an investment in local economies.
Check out a breakdown of several charts in the video above. You can also check out the chart below for a breakdown of the economic impact by county.
