Congress successfully claimed victory in Manipur, overtaking the BJP and its ally, NPF. Both the Meitei-dominated valley and the tribal-majority hills cast their votes for the grand old party after a tumultuous year marked by ethnic violence that claimed more than 200 lives. JNU professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam triumphed over state minister and BJP candidate Thounaojam Basantakumar in Inner Manipur.
