Vicario admits playing for Italy ‘means even more’ after his Spurs move
Guglielmo Vicario has revealed that representing Italy means even more to him now since he plays his club football in England with Tottenham Hotspur.
Vicario has had a fantastic first season at Tottenham, managing to adapt quickly to the demands of the Premier League and the Lilywhites’ system.
Vicario had a solid first season in goal with Tottenham
The challenge was a considerable one for the 27-year-old, not just because of the increased pressure and scrutiny at N17 when compared to Empoli, but also because he went from a defensively minded side to one that plays on the front-foot with a high line, where he is expected to play out from the back.
The goalkeeper can be proud of what he has delivered in a Spurs shirt and he will be hoping to take that form into the Euros this summer if he gets an opportunity to start at the tournament.
Vicario looks forward to Italy duty even more at Tottenham
When asked about donning the Azzurri shirt, the Tottenham number one told RAI Sport (as relayed by Football Italia): “Playing for Italy is always something that gives you great pride, but it means even more to me now that I play my football abroad.”
The Spurs star played all 90 minutes and kept a clean sheet for Italy on Tuesday as they played out a 0-0 draw with Turkey.
When asked if the result and performance raise some concern ahead of the Euros, Vicario responded: “I think this is just part of the process, it is our first friendly. We have another game tomorrow and then a friendly on Sunday, so we are working to fix what needs fixing.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Vicario is certainly not a worse goalkeeper than Gianluigi Donnarumma and on merit, one can argue that the Tottenham man deserves to start.
However, the PSG star is now one of the senior members of the Italy side and one would thus expect Luciano Spalletti to stick with him as his number one for the Euros.
I would like to see Vicario become more commanding and physical next season from set pieces with many teams targeting the keeper from corner kicks to their advantage.
