Trooper shot during I-88 stop named Trooper of the Year

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Trooper Richard W. Albert was honored by the American Association of State Troopers and named the 2024 Trooper of the Year. Albert was shot in the upper left arm when he conducted a traffic stop on I-88 on June 16, 2023.

New York State Police say the incident highlighted Trooper Albert's bravery under extreme circumstances. Despite the dire situation, police say he stayed engaged and committed to ensuring the public's safety.

When the incident occurred, Trooper Albert observed a silver SUV traveling over 100 miles per hour on I-88. He conducted a traffic stop, and as he approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, the operator put down the window and opened fire.

Trooper Albert was struck in the arm and returned fire. The shooter and a passenger then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The uninjured passenger was taken into custody shortly after.

Police were able to locate the shooter about an hour and a half later near Darby Hill Road in Duanesburg with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The shooter was taken to Albany Medical Center and later pronounced dead.

Police say Trooper Albert's heroic actions showcase and reflect the highest ideals of courage, keeping in the traditions of New York State Police.
