2024 VMAs preview: Which videos will be nominated this summer at MTV Video Music Awards?
We’re getting closer to summertime, which means the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards are soon to come. The show is slated to be held on September 10 and honor the best in music videos from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024. With big releases in the past couple of months from some of the most iconic stars in music right now, who can we expect to be nominated from what’s been released so far?
Reigning Video of the Year champ Taylor Swift is back yet again with her newest hit, “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone. Swift is beloved at the VMAs, winning the top prize four times (more than anyone else), and she’s also the second most awarded artist in the show’s history, with 23 Moon Persons to her name. This new video, off of her successful album “The Tortured Poets Department,” has a lot going for it. The song is a big hit, and four-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie”) took care of the photography. Plus, with cameos from Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles, it is sure to catch people’s eye. Swift’s fame is one of a kind, and since this is a fan-voted award, she could very well be in the play for a record-extending fifth victory. However, there are other contenders who could challenge her.
A big one is Swift’s labelmate Ariana Grande, whose video for her hit “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” went viral. It’s a great reinterpretation of the classic film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and tugged at people’s heartstrings due to its representation of grieving a relationship. It is very likely that the video will get some major nominations, but it might also go all the way to wins. Additionally, Grande has never won Video of the Year, so this career resurgence might be a great moment to reward her, especially after so many VMA nominations over the years.
Another significant challenger is Billie Eilish with the video for her hit “Lunch.” It features Eilish playfully performing the song’s lyrics, and while it might be simple, it is quite a fun ride in terms of its editing and cinematography. Eilish is a consistent nominee at the VMAs, with 28 bids total. Like Grande, she has yet to win the top prize, so the hype surrounding her new era could push her fans to give her a win here.
There’s also Sabrina Carpenter, whose “Espresso” is becoming one of this year’s defining hits. Carpenter has yet to be nominated for a VMA, so she might be in play in multiple categories including, perhaps, Best New Artist. Even if she’s ineligible for that, she could still show up in Video of the Year with the song’s sweet, summery video being one of this year’s most popular. Or perhaps breakout Benson Boone will take home Best New Artist, and could be a contender elsewhere as well, for his hit “Beautiful Things.”
Other contenders include Jack Harlow’s “Lovin On Me,” which might be a shoo-in for Song of the Year and could get into Video of the Year simply due to how successful the song was. Another rapper who has had a big year is Megan Thee Stallion, who topped the Billboard Hot 100 with “Hiss.” The song’s video is full of great effects and captivating moments, so she could also be in the top lineup.
On the pop side, Brit star Dua Lipa could be coming for her first Video of the Year nomination with her hit “Houdini” being an editing and choreography extravaganza. Tate McRae’s “Greedy” was a massive hit, and its choreography-fueled music video will likely be a factor as well. Last but certainly not least, there’s Doja Cat, whose “Paint The Town Red” was a smash; she has been thoroughly embraced by the VMAs, and her videos tend to be very artistic, so you might want to bet on her getting in.
We’ll see what other videos make an impact for the remainder of the eligibility period. But for now it looks like a star-packed year, and possibly a banner year for female artists especially.
