At least 104 killed in militia attack on Southeast Sudan village

According to The New York Times, at least 104 people were killed in a militia attack on a village in Al-Jazirah state, southeastern Sudan.

The Sudanese army stated that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were responsible for the attack and promised a “harsh response.”

UNICEF reported that at least 35 children were killed and 20 injured in the attack on Wednesday, June 5.

Catherine Russell, the head of UNICEF, expressed horror at the reports of children being killed and injured and called on all parties to adhere to international laws.

Sudanese army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan visited the village on Thursday, promising a harsh response to the RSF for the massacre.

Al-Tahir Ibrahim al-Khair, the governor of Al-Jazirah, condemned the attack as a “war crime” and demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice.

The New York Times confirmed the high death toll and published videos showing at least 50 bodies being prepared for burial in the village.

Videos showed RSF vehicles and armed men shooting at the village for five minutes, with the footage verified by The New York Times and the Sudanese Witness Project.

David Cameron, the British Foreign Secretary, condemned the attack on social media, stating that the world is watching and that the RSF must stop such assaults.
