Why is Marcus Rashford not in the England squad at Euro 2024?
Marcus Rashford struggled to hit good form for Manchester United this season, scoring eight goals across the 2023/24 campaign.
This marks a significant decline compared to his 30-goal tally the previous season.
He also missed six games across the season due to injury which created uncertainty about his future at the club.
Rashford then saw his place in the England squad slip away as boss Southgate admitted it was “difficult” to leave the striker out.
The England boss said: “These are, of course, difficult calls.
“You are talking about players that are very good players and who have been an important part of what we have done over a number of years.
“With Marcus, I just feel that other players in that area have had better seasons. It is as simple as that.”
He also added that Rashford handled the news well and said: “I have to say all the boys, when I have spoken to them, Ben [Chilwell], Marcus, Jordan – who were the three that were with us last time – they were incredibly professional.
“Considering the disappointment, they dealt with it very well.”
Following this statement, Rashford took to social media to wish the rest of his England teammates good luck for the tournament.
He wrote on an Instagram Story: “Wishing Gareth and the boys all the best for the up and coming tournament.”

Speaking ahead of the Serbia clash, he said: “We all want to be remembered to have won a major tournament with England – not just to have had good campaigns.
“So we know it is something to respect and be proud of, and to keep pushing ourselves.”
Before adding: “If we don’t win, we’re going to be disappointed.
“As much as you can be unlucky and go out on penalties, we really want to win and start winning as a national team because we have been taking steps towards this moment.
“It is going to be tough, we know that, but we’re ready for the challenge.”
