Will BCCI accept Gambhir’s demands and appoint him as head coach?
After being approached by the BCCI for the head coach position, former opening batsman Gautam Gambhir’s appointment is almost confirmed according to a BCCI source. For months, Gambhir has been linked with the Indian head coach job, with current boss Rahul Dravid’s contract set to expire after the ongoing T20 World Cup.
“We had a talk with Gambhir about becoming the head coach of the Indian cricket team. He will replace the outgoing Rahul Dravid after the T20 world cup,” the BCCI source said.
However, Gambhir laid forward a few demands that had to be fulfilled by the BCCI if they wanted him to become India’s new head coach. His main demand was that he needed his own support staff. The current staff has Vikram Rathour as the batting coach, Paras Mhambrey as bowling coach and T Dilip as the fielding coach. There is a huge possibility that all these coaches will be replaced if Gambhir becomes in-charge. He also said that not only will he make changes in the staff but also in the team.
Under Gambhir’s mentorship, Kolkata Knight Riders secured the IPL 2024 title. His leadership at KKR has been widely praised, contributing to his rising profile as a top coaching candidate. During a recent event, Gambhir suggested that “I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and those across the globe as well,” the 42-year-old said. Gambhir was part of India’s T20 World Cup winning team in 2007 and the 2011 ODI World Cup side.
While there has been no official announcement by the BCCI so far, a Dainik Jagran report on Sunday said that the decision is all but a done deal.
