Lutheran Village at Miller’s Grant in Ellicott City breaks ground on $78M expansion
Eight years after Lutheran Village at Miller’s Grant opened in Ellicott City, the nonprofit, faith-based retirement community offering continuing care has begun a $206 million expansion project.
The Lutheran Social Ministries of Maryland project started last month and is scheduled to be completed in October 2025, at a cost of $78 million. The 147,383-square-foot expansion includes the following amenities:
- 43 independent living apartments
- 4 assisted living suites
- 20 memory care units
- 4 skilled nursing care units
- A new gastropub restaurant offering indoor and outdoor seating
- Club room
- Theater
- A 17,000+ square-foot performing arts center & chapel
- Balcony for sunset views and gatherings
- Multipurpose rooms and common spaces
“The project will permit the community to serve more of Howard County’s growing older adult population,” a news release states.
According to the Howard County government website, about one in five Howard residents will be 65 years old or older as of 2030. That’s about 21% of the county’s population.
“Also, by 2030 it is expected that there will be more than 9,700 residents in Howard County 85 and older, more than double the number that are in that age group today,” the website states. “It is important that this rapid growth of the older and more vulnerable population in Howard County be anticipated and planned for.”
Lutheran Village, with a minimum age of 60 for residents, is taking those steps. Its care includes independent living, assisted living, short-term rehabilitation and long-term care, according to its website.
“The project allows us to enhance our amenities and services for existing residents and grow to meet the needs of older adults in Howard County,” Jeff Branch, president and chief executive officer of Lutheran Social Ministries of Maryland stated in the news release.
The community broke ground on its first phase in 2014, which included 241 independent living apartments and houses, 20 assisted living units, 12 skilled nursing units, a physical therapy and rehab center, three restaurants, a fitness center, a pool, a tennis court, gardens and multipurpose rooms. About 350 residents live in Lutheran Village at Miller’s Grant.
