Extreme heat bears down on tri-state area for third day straight

0

NEW YORK (PIX11) – A heat advisory is in effect for parts of New Jersey and Connecticut on Thursday as people around the tri-state area find ways to stay cool.

The advisory was extended into Friday evening. In New York City, heat indices reached the low to mid-90s.

"We’ve seen more business earlier throughout the day. Usually we get a longer line maybe around 3 [p.m.] where the peak sun is at, but today since it’s hot all day long we’ve had a long line," said an employee of Ralph's Famous Italian Ices.

The AC was turned on in public transit, and the MTA would monitor service due to concerns with electricity and power supply, the agency said.

"Vulnerability in our system for our tracks and switches are substations are communications rooms are signals to overheating," said Jamie Torres-Springer, with MTA Construction and Development.

New York City Emergency Management also reminded sensitive respiratory groups that the air quality was unhealthy.

Signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion are if you stop sweating, having a fever, feeling faint or dizzy, experiencing vomiting or nausea and weakness or muscle cramps.

An Air Quality Alert expanded to include New York City, coastal Connecticut and Long Island from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday.
