Report: Bentancur could face Tottenham ban for comment on Son Heung-min

The Times have revealed that the Football Association could hit Rodrigo Bentancur with a ban after the Tottenham midfielder made a derogatory comment about the people of South Korean.

The comment, which was made by Bentancur about his teammate Son Heung-min, has created a lot of controversy over the last few days.

While being interviewed on the Uruguayan television programme Por la Camiseta last week, the midfielder was asked by the host for a Tottenham player’s shirt and he responded: “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin as well because they all look the same.”

The distasteful joke has not gone down well and Bentancur issued an apology to his teammate, admitting that it was “a very bad joke” and telling the Tottenham captain that he loves him and he would never intend to disrespect or hurt him (talkSPORT).

The Urugwayan’s apology was accepted by Son, who stated that the midfielder realised his mistake, adding that the pair remain ‘brothers’ and will continue fighting for the same objectives next season (ESPN).

Meanwhile, Tottenham have also released a statement on the matter, confirming that they will provide further education for all players in line with their diversity, equality and inclusion objectives.

Bentancur could receive a ban for his comments

According to The Times, even though Son has accepted Bentancur’s apology, the former Juventus man could still be hit with a ban.

The report states that the FA are now looking closely into the incident to decide if it meets the threshold for a charge.

If Bentancur is charged for this mistake, it will be an embarrassing moment for him and for the club as a whole. The 26-year-old should use this as a learning opportunity and come to realise that these sorts of distasteful jokes have no place in this era.
