Columbus parents rally to save their schools
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Columbus City Schools parents, students and teachers gathered at Lindbergh Elementary School Sunday to rally to “save our schools.”
The rally comes after the superintendent’s task force formed to close and consolidate schools has been stirring up controversy in the district.
People took turns at the microphone sharing why the school board should rethink their plans, with some saying the process has been stressful for them and their children.
“It's important for our voices to be heard not only as adults, but as children, and we are their voices,” Valley View Elementary School parent Emily Addair said.
“It's not just stressful for us, but even them as teachers, they could lose their jobs,” Valley View Elementary School parent Stacie Proitsis said. “Our kids are losing the relationships that they've built.”
According to a timeline posted on the task force’s website, recommendations are set to be made to the board of education this month, with implementation coming in August.
Columbus City Schools next board meeting is Tuesday, and some of the parents at Sunday’s rally intend to speak about the issue there.
Both Lindbergh and Valley View schools are among those being considered for closure, according to initial recommendations from the task force.
