Travis County celebrating marriage equality with free wedding ceremonies all week

TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) -- The Travis County Clerk's Office is holding free wedding ceremonies throughout this week to celebrate the ninth anniversary of the legalization of same-sex marriage.

"Amid ongoing extreme attacks on the LGBTQ community from the Texas State Legislature, our office remains committed to supporting and celebrating the rights of all Texans, including the right to marry who they love, regardless of sexual orientation or gender expression," Dyana Limon-Mercado, the Travis County Clerk, said in a news release about the celebrations.

Last year the county held a one-day event to celebrate the landmark date, and this year it decided to expand the event to a full week. Wedding ceremonies started on Saturday and will continue Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

How you can participate in the ceremonies

If you and your partner would like to get married during the free ceremonies, you will need to have your marriage license for at least 72 hours. Monday is the last day you can receive a marriage license to take advantage of the wedding ceremonies on Friday.

Once you have obtained the marriage license you can set an appointment with the county on its website.
