The Karnataka government has prohibited the use of artificial colouring agents in kebabs, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, citing adverse effects on public health. This decision follows earlier bans on artificial colouring in 'Gobi Manchurian' and 'Cotton Candy'. Violation of this rule under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 rule 59, can lead to severe penalties, including imprisonment ranging from seven years to life term and fines up to Rs 10 lakh. An official order to this effect was issued on Monday.
