Topeka man arrested after allegedly attacking vehicle containing children, police chase
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Topeka police say a local man is under arrest after allegedly hitting a vehicle containing children over the weekend.
The Topeka Police Department (TPD) was called around 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 22 to an area near the intersection of SW Sixth Street and Fairlawn Road. Officers arriving at the scene found a 20-year-old Topeka man was allegedly hitting a vehicle belonging to someone he knows which also contained children.
Rosie Nichols with the TPD said officers located the vehicle involved in the incident near SW First Street and I-70 and tried to pull it over. The driver refused to pull over and a chase began.
Police recorded multiple traffic violations during the pursuit before the vehicle crashed in the 200 block of SE Golden Avenue. The driver tried to flee on foot but was found near the Shunga Creek. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries before being arrested on the following charges:
- Aggravated battery.
- Aggravated endangering a child.
- Criminal damage to property.
- Interference with law enforcement officer.
- Flee or attempt to elude.
- Driving while suspended.
- Reckless driving.
- Fail to stop at a stop sign.
- Driving without lights when needed.
- Failure to give signal when changing lanes or turning.
- Driving on the left side of roadway.
- Fail to stop at accident.
- Vehicle registration renewal.
