Chiefs release Isaiah Buggs amid legal troubles

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- As he faces domestic violence and animal cruelty accusations, the Kansas City Chiefs are releasing defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs, according to NFL Network's Tom Peliserro.

The Chiefs signed Buggs to the practice squad in January after he spent two stints with the Detroit Lions over the past two seasons. He wasn't on the active roster at any point during the last Super Bowl run, and the team singed him to a reserve/future contract worth nearly $1.3 million for 2024 according to Spotrac.

Buggs' bond was revoked last week after prosecutors in Alabama charged him with second-degree domestic violence and second-degree burglary. He was arrested on June 16 and released after posting bond.

He first encountered legal trouble this offseason after two dogs were allegedly found starving and dirty on a property he was renting in Tuscaloosa.

According to police, a neighbor reported seeing two dogs that were “surrounded by feces” on March 28 with no access to food or water, in addition to being out there for 10 days. One of the dogs has since been euthanized while another is being treated for Parvo.

Buggs' agent claimed he was a target of police harassment in that case. Both cases are still pending.

He recorded three tackles and one sack last season in Detroit, and has spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders in six NFL seasons.

While the release has been reported, the transaction hasn't appeared on the NFL wire yet, and the Chiefs haven't responded to FOX4's inquiry about the situation yet.
