Local YMCA offers first responder respite program

SILVER BAY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Silver Bay YMCA has launched a new program focused on the well-being of first responders and their families. The program gives firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and law enforcement officers a chance to make memories and reconnect with their families.

Eligibility includes paid or volunteer active-duty or retired police officers, firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, and partners or immediate families of first responders who died while serving in the last three years. Silver Bay YMCA said the program acknowledges first responders' dedication and sacrifices.

The new program is offered at no or reduced cost and is entirely funded by donations. To donate, visit the Silver Bay YMCA website or call (518) 543-8511.

Silver Bay YMCA VP of Sales and Marketing Lindsey Butler said the organization created the program to thank first responders for everything they do for their communities. "As our mission states, Silver Bay is for strengthening communities, and that's what our first responders do. We're so happy to be able to give these folks time away, in a peaceful setting, to reconnect and relax with their families," Butler said.

According to the United States Department of Commerce, an estimated 4.6 million people served as first responders in 2022. Silver Bay YMCA Development Assistant Sheaky Williford said donations from the community make the first responder respite program a possibility.

"Our respite programs serve individuals and families nationwide," Williford said. "Those who are undergoing cancer treatment, have served our country in the military or as first responders, families who have opened their homes to children who don't have one, and families who are experiencing financial struggle are welcome at Silver Bay."
