Oklahoma City Animal Shelter rolls out new intake policy
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - The Oklahoma City Animal Shelter is hoping to manage overpopulation with a new intake policy.
Effective immediately, the Shelter says its updated policy should address the problem of pet overpopulation in Oklahoma City.
Officials say beginning Tuesday at 9 a.m., intake will be limited to 30 dogs and 30 cats a day. The revised policy keeps the same limit on dogs and a new limit on cats to combat overcrowding and the need for euthanasia.
"We are committed to the welfare of all animals in our care," OKC Animal Welfare Superintendent Jon Gary said. "This decision underscores our dedication to finding sustainable solutions and maintaining high standards of care."
According to the Shelter, animals will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the daily intake limit is reached, a sign will be placed on the front doors.
The Shelter also has other ways the community can help limit overcrowding:
- Rehome Pets Responsibly: Prioritize rehoming pets within your network of family and friends before considering surrendering them to the Shelter.
- Provide Temporary Shelter: If you find a lost pet, consider providing temporary shelter while attempting to locate its owners. Promptly report found pets at okc.gov/animalwelfare.
- Reserve Shelter for Those in Need: Ensure Shelter resources are reserved for animals in immediate need of care.
The updated intake policy will remain in place until further notice.
