Wheeler Dealers’ host Mike Brewer reveals modern classic sports car he’d buy right now if he could only spend £5,000
WHEELER Dealers host Mike Brewer has revealed to fans which sports car he would buy with a budget of £5,000 – and it’s a much-loved modern classic.
The TV star is well known for his ability to turn nearly any motor into a profit – with his show dedicated to picking up second-hand cars and selling them on after a good spruce up.
After decades of selling cars, Mike knows a thing or two about good quality motors.
And when posed with a choice between some of the best German sports car makers by a fan on X, Mike had just one model in mind.
Asked by a social media user which motor he would choose with a “strong chassis not known for rusting” from Porsche, BMW, Mercedes or Audi, Mike simply replied: “Mk1 Audi TT.”
The iconic sports car remains a hot favourite among petrolheads, some 24 years after it first rolled off the production line – and nearly a year after it was discontinued by the German carmaker.
Indeed, replies to Mike’s post were in full agreement with his choice, with one user writing: “Agreed. I never bought one but I was close. I would still be interested.”
Another wrote: “MK1 Audi TT is a design icon and a sure-fire future classic.”
And a third replied with a picture of their own TT example, adding: “Still got my MK1. Absolutely no rust. 130k on the clock.”
This isn’t the first time Mike has talked up the first-gen Audi TT either, as he recommended it as a car to seek out in a chat with Sun Motors earlier this year.
Revealing what cars he thinks will become future classics, he said: “I’ve been thinking about this recently, the early Audi TT, a Mk1 Audi TT, especially the 225.
“You can buy one of those for sub £5,000 now, and that’s an awful lot of bang for the buck.
“They were sold at a loss, they were much more engineered than what they got for them at showroom level.
“If you get the 225 horsepower one, what a great car.”
What’s more, car dealer James Russell of The Motor Grid picked out the Quattro Sport edition as a great motor to pick up for less than £10,000 – describing it as “a bit special.”
He said: “It’s got that black roof, which makes it really iconic, and not many people know about that.
“They’re a bit of a hidden gem, these cars, and of course they have Recaro seats.
“It’s just a little bit special.”
Sun Motors supremo Rob Gill was able to drive the final generation Audi TT last year – dubbing it as an “all-singing roadster.”
Elsewhere, petrolheads have been urged to keep an eye out for six classic cars that could rise in value in the near future.
